Recently we’ve been bringing you some information about the success of China’s UCWeb mobile browser, which after success in China has expanded abroad to surpass the 20 million overseas downloads milestone.
The company’s CEO Yu Yongfu
has already made a strong push to bring in users in America, stating that the US and China will “form the core of the mobile internet market in the future.” And today we’re hearing from UCWeb that the company has India squarely in its sights as well. An Economic Times report today cites its UCWeb’s director for international strategic cooperation as saying:
We expect mobile internet user base in India to reach close to 300 million by 2015. Out of this, we are looking to reach out to 35 percent of people, which will be close to 100 million users by 2015.
Currently the browser claims to have 20 percent of the mobile browser market in the country. In order to facilitate achieving its target, UCWeb has established an office and set up local servers in India. ‘Aggressive’ hiring is said to follow.
But as we mentioned earlier in the week, not everything is rosy for the company, as it has a bit of a feud going with rival Tencent regarding that company’s market share claims, as well as an anti-competitive lawsuit to boot.
It’s great to see new browser alternatives springing up on this of the ocean. Our personal favorite here at PO is the Sleipnir browser out of Japan. I was using it for tabbed browsing on the iPad (see my video demo) before iOS 5 brought that function to Mobile Safari. And my colleague Steven seems to enjoy it on the Mac and on Android.
