Driver in Uber India rape case sentenced to life in prison

Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav, who allegedly raped a woman passenger in Delhi last December.

Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav was convicted for raping a woman passenger last December.

Nearly a year after he was accused of raping a passenger while driving an Uber, Shiv Kumar Yadav was sentenced to life imprisonment in Delhi today, Reuters reports. Yadav was found guilty on a slew of charges including rape, kidnapping and abducting, and criminal intimidation.

Although the assault happened in early December 2014, Shiv Kumar Yadav was only found guilty of the charges held against him on October 20, 2015.

After Yadav’s initial arrest, the Delhi Police filed a report against Uber under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code. “In investigations so far, it emerged that the company cheated their customer on the pretext of providing safe commuting with duly verified driver,” deputy commissioner of police (north) Madhur Verma explained to PTI.

Because the taxi aggregator promised to help its customers reach their destinations safely, its lack of rigor when screening Yadav was considered misleading by the transport authorities. Uber was subsequently banned from the city and only returned last month. Yadav had previously spent seven months in prison for raping a woman in 2011 and had also been reported by another Uber passenger a few weeks prior to the incident.
