Uber has launched UberEats, its food delivery service, in Singapore, it announced at a press event yesterday. The service is available only in the Central Business District, Tanjong Pagar, Orchard, and River Valley for now.
Over 100 restaurants are available across various price points. While hawker food isn’t on the menu, that may change in the future depending on customer demand. UberEats promises a delivery time of 35 minutes. It has a S$3 delivery charge, but that will be waived for now to let more people experience the service.
UberEats was previously only available in 14 cities in the United States, Australia, Canada, and France, making Singapore the first Asian city to get it.
UberEats, which has a separate app from the main Uber one, will be competing against FoodPanda, Grain, and Deliveroo in the city-state.
These food delivery services face a unique challenge in Singapore. With plenty of food options within walking distance, and traffic conditions that are much better than neighboring cities, heading out for a meal is convenient.
This explains why Uber’s rival Grab has not launched food delivery in Singapore yet, but is already testing such a service, called GrabFood, in Jakarta.
Nonetheless, as noted by one commentator, Uber’s massive scale and vehicle network can help it succeed in this business, which has razor-thin margins.
