Twitter is now the Top Social Network in Japan

Update: The data in the chart only represents PC-based email visitation, it does not include visitation from mobile devices or Internet cafes. This is confirmed with comScore. Twitter is top only by PC-email visits. Thanks Serkan for the heads up.

2 months ago, we wrote that Twitter was trending in Japan. It recorded a 13.2 million visits and is only 0.3 million away from Mixi, the then most popular social network in Japan.

After three months of traffic tracking, comScore has just released a new data that tells a tale of Twitter victory. Twitter surpassed Mixi by a significant margin and claimed top spot.

In December 2010, Mixi’s total unique visits remained static at 13.5 million while Twitter reached 14.6 million unique visitors, a 176 percent increased from the previous year.

The chart showed an upward spike toward the end of the year and it could be explained by how Japan had used Twitter during New Year eve. On that joyous day, Japan (and other Asia countries similar to Tokyo time) broke Twitter’s record, hitting 6,939 tweets per second.

Twitter is popular in Japan because it is highly mobile friendly and Japanese use their phone a lot. Another reason that we learned through Aaron and Quora was that Japanese are able to express more with 140 characters when tweeting in Japanese than English.

Facebook remains to grow steadily in Japan. It reached 6.1 million visitors in December but is nowhere near Twitter’s success. Nonetheless, it has greater success in other Asia countries like Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (Singapore loves Facebook).
