It turns out Grabโ€™s service between Johor and Singapore was illegal

Grab app - Grabtaxi, Grabcar, Grabbike

GrabHitch, the cross-border carpooling service between Singapore and Johor Bahru, has suffered plenty of hitches upon launch. Turned out it was illegal. According to Channel NewsAsia:

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Monday (June 20) it has informed the company that the original service model โ€˜did not comply with regulations in Singapore.โ€™

Grab is currently running a free pilot program for their Singapore-Johor Bahru service, however, and LTA noted that such free cross-border carpool rides are legal.

The LTA added that both Malaysia- and Singapore-registered cars cannot provide commercial services across the border without a public service vehicle license.

Grab launched its cross-border service last week, but then announced the switch to the free mode just before launch.

Grab is talking to LTA to see if they can work around the issue.
