Disney To Bring Cars 2 To Tudou

We received word from Chinese video service Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO) today that it has signed an ‘excusive agreement’ with Disney (NYSE:DIS) for the online release of the animated film Cars 2 in China. Its statement reads that this is the first [official] release of a full-length Pixar film on a mainland China video site.

The streaming video service, which IPO’d back in August, is one of many Chinese video sites that are fighting to obtain exclusive rights to popular video content. That battle is proving to be a costly one, with web broadcast prices skyrocketing over the past few years.

Just last week Tudou announced a joint venture with LeTV which should help the company acquire domestic film and television rights as well.

On a lighter note, the Tudou’s co-founder Marc Van der Chijs recently wrote on his blog about his bizarre experience shopping at a Shanghai Carrefour. Amazingly he stumbled across a picture of his daughter featured on the package of a halloween costume product!
