Trump tariffs trigger crypto’s largest-ever $18.3b liquidation

Cryptocurrency markets saw about US$18.3 billion in liquidations after US President Donald Trump threatened new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports on October 10, according to CoinGlass.

Bitcoin, ether, and solana were among the hardest hit, with roughly US$5 billion, US$4 billion, and US$2 billion liquidated, respectively.

CoinGlass called this the largest liquidation event in cryptocurrency history.

Bitcoin fell nearly 10% in five days, trading at US$111,616.20 after dropping to US$103,000 on October 10.

Ether declined 14.2% from US$4,365.63 to US$3,742.88, while solana dropped nearly 20% from US$223.10 to US$178.72.

The sell-off came alongside sharp declines in the Nasdaq and S&P 500, their steepest in six months, following earlier crypto gains after Trump’s pro-crypto policy moves.
