Trump Jr-backed VC invests in crypto prediction site Polymarket

Polymarket, a predictions market platform recently valued at over US$1 billion, has received a double-digit million dollar investment from 1789 Capital, the venture capital firm where Donald Trump Jr. is a partner.

Trump Jr. will also join the advisory board of Polymarket.

Americans currently cannot use Polymarket, though this could change after the company acquired derivatives exchange QCEX for US$112 million, obtaining a CFTC license in the process.

Polymarket said recent investigations by the DOJ and CFTC have concluded; these probes previously included an FBI raid at CEO Shayne Coplan’s apartment.

1789 Capital founder Omeed Malik and Coplan began discussions about 18 months ago, but the firm waited to invest until there was a clearer legal path for Polymarket’s entry into the U.S. market.

1️⃣ Regulatory compliance transforms prediction markets from legal risk to institutional investment

Polymarket’s journey illustrates how regulatory clarity can rapidly shift a company’s prospects from legal jeopardy to major investment opportunities.

Just months after an FBI raid on CEO Shayne Coplan’s apartment in November, the company has now closed both DOJ and CFTC investigations and secured a multimillion-dollar investment from Trump Jr.’s fund 1.

The acquisition of derivatives exchange QCEX, which included a crucial CFTC license, provides Polymarket the legal framework to re-enter the U.S. market after being forced out in 2022 1.

This regulatory pathway explains why 1789 Capital waited 18 months to invest despite early interest from founder Omeed Malik, demonstrating how institutional investors prioritize legal clarity over early market entry 1.

The transformation from regulatory target to potential IPO candidate—as 1789 Capital now views Polymarket—shows how quickly regulatory approval can unlock institutional capital in emerging financial sectors.
