Suhail Abidi remembers the time when a close friend and his wife had just had a baby and found themselves completely at sea.

“They had finally started a lovely family. But we now live in a fast-paced society and family dynamics have changed. I noticed my friend struggling,” says Suhail, who then saw how most new parents were in the same boat.

The struggle was primarily for information and advice on raising a child.

That’s what made him realize “there was something right there – a market completely untapped yet totally necessary.” So Suhail went ahead and delivered his own baby – parenting app Tinystep.

Quite simply, Tinystep is an interactive platform that lets parents ask questions, connect with each other, and share their experiences. A bit of a social network for parents.

Earlier much of this information would come from grandparents, uncles, aunts, and just about everybody else in a joint family set-up. But with people in cities opting to have nuclear families in India now, that source is distant – if not dry.

Founded in September last year, Tinystep has seen 20,000 downloads so far. As a source of quick answers, the Bangalore-based startup is obviously catering to a growing demand.

Honing parenting skills with technology

I remember how I registered with Baby Centre, a parenting website, for advice during pregnancy many years ago, and it turned out to be a superb resource for new and expecting parents. They still religiously send me mails on developmental milestones for my child.

In the past few years, many Indian parenting websites have come up. My Child App, Kidss, KleverKid, and MyCity4Kids are but a few examples.
