While most other apps vie for users’ attention, TikTok is going in the opposite direction.
The short-video app is so addictive, even the company is now capping screen time limit, mostly for teens.
Accounts belonging to users under 18 will have a 60-minute daily screen time limit. If the limit is reached, teens will need to enter a passcode to continue watching. The app will also send a prompt for users to set a daily screen time limit if they opt out of the 60-minute default and spend more than 100 minutes on TikTok in a day.
Families can also set a custom daily screen time limit for their teenage users.
Most notably, everyone will soon be able to set their own customized screen time limits for each day of the week and set a schedule to mute notifications.
TikTok said it consulted with academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit.
About 60% of TikTok users belong to Gen Z, referring to those born between the late 1990s and early 2010s. TikTok’s screen time per user averages at a whopping 26 hours monthly.
