The spirit of the World Cyber Games lives on with the new World eSports Championship Games

Seoul’s Aegis Gaming Network Inc. (AGN) and Beijiing’s Global Mobile Game Confederation have teamed up to launch the World eSports Championship Games or WECG, in the hopes that this new eSports tournament can become an “independent sports ecosystem for the world leading players to train, collaborate, and develop their skills.” WEGC is expected to be a replacement for the Olympic-style gaming events made popular by the now-defunct World Cyber Games (WCG).

The WECG team includes former WCG chief operating officer Bory Jun and David Song, founder of the Global Mobile Game Confederation and a recognized thought-leader in technology and mobile gaming in China.

WECG will continue the Olympic tradition set by the World Cyber Games by having only the best from each country competing on its final stage. Competitors will have to win a series of domestic games if they want to compete in the inaugural and international WECG held later this year.

The WECG also plans to add special tournaments throughout the year, including events like the “WECG Continents Championship” and “WEGC Global Challenge.” There will also be an open bracket tournament, though no official games have yet to be announced.

The kick-off “WECG Global Challenge” tournament will be held in July and will be without nationality restrictions. The final tournaments will be held in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, this will culminate in a December grand finals, which will pit the world’s best players against one another.

eSports fans all over the world are going to have to wait for June 13 to find out the exact form the WECG will take, and whether their favorite games will be featured. The June 13 announcement will also include information on cities are under consideration to host the game. It’s going to be an exciting day, and just might be the birth of a new tradition.
