Tesla set to launch Terafab project for AI chips
Elon Musk said on Saturday that Tesla’s Terafab project will launch in seven days.
Musk said last year Tesla would probably have to build “a gigantic chip fab” to make AI chips. Musk did not provide details on location, capacity, or a timeline beyond those comments.
If built, the fab would mark a move into chip fabrication.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tesla’s Terafab plan stems from a supply chain worry
- The plan comes from Elon Musk’s concern that current suppliers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics, cannot cover Tesla’s future AI processor needs 1.
- He said even their “best-case output” would still miss what Tesla’s autonomous driving and robotics roadmap calls for 1.
- Musk put a target on a Tesla fab that starts at least 100,000 wafer starts per month, with a goal of scaling to 1 million, and he has not said whether a “Terafab Project” launch in seven days means construction, a public announcement, or operations 1.
- If Tesla builds it, the factory would bring chip fabrication in-house to lock in supply for custom AI chips, including the planned AI5 chip for autonomous driving and robotics 1.
The Terafab idea could shift how AI hardware gets built
- Producing chips internally would push against the long-running fabless model, where companies design chips and pay foundries such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics to manufacture them 1.
- The talk lands during a broader race for AI chip manufacturing capacity as companies try to secure supply for AI plans 2.
- If it works, other large AI developers may seek tighter control over fabrication capacity, raising the stakes for semiconductor infrastructure and talent worldwide.
- The effort also changes the outlook for incumbents, since Musk has floated a partnership with Intel while stressing no deal has been signed, and Intel is chasing large outside customers for its factories 1.
