Why must Indian dating apps encourage same sex marriage?

    Same Sex Marriage

    Same Sex marriage

After a long fought victory for the gay rights movement, US Supreme Court rules same-sex marriage legal across the United States. The ruling is a major victory for same-sex couples, gay individuals, gay rights organisations, and straight allies (those who are straight but support LGBT equality). In countries like India, where religion forms the basis of law, it is difficult to propagate even a scientifically-backed belief in equal rights for LGBT individuals. The path forward may involve developing a complex mix of enabling factors that are tied to the satisfaction of basic needs as well as the material prosperity of the inhabitants of the country.

Homosexuality is not a disease or mental illness that needs to be, or can be, ‘cured’ or ‘altered’, it is just another expression of human sexuality. Homosexuals are as normal as ‘you’ and ‘me’. Yet, just because they love ‘their own kind’, they are ostracised and hounded by the law. And branded as ‘queers’— precisely what they are not. Homosexuals are normal humans attracted to their own gender. Relationships are defined by comfort levels like heterosexuality; homosexuality is an orientation which is not unnatural. The world accepts this orientation; society is changing. What is not changing is the legal mindset in India. Why must gay marriages are allowed in India, is a pertinent question. Logically speaking, every citizen has a fundamental right to life guaranteed by the Indian constitution.

This may be interpreted as if a citizen chooses a gay partner in his/her life, it may be allowed. As marriage is a legal way of binding two people, the gay relationship can be legalized through marriage which will prevent the cases of illegitimate secret relations. Another logical point is respect. A satisfactory personal life is as much a right of gay couples as straight couples. As an opposing argument it can be asked as to why they must not. This question arises from the inherent idea- ‘is leading a gay life correct?’ One fundamental reason for this line of questioning is the growth and development pattern of the human conscience. As a recognized and involved member of society, man is raised with certain traditional notions of life and the way of living. Even though not present as a written commandment, a majority of society grows up the idea of thinking heterosexual relations(relations with members of the opposite sex) as the right way of living and homosexual (same sex) as wrong. No wonder in India, this is still a jaw dropping question to at least 50% of India’s population.

With all the rich cultural history India has to offer and its numerous scientific achievements it’s hard to conclude with a concrete answer as to whether gay marriages should be allowed in India or not. In conclusion, it comes to individual interpretation of ‘what is correct and what is not’. Homosexuality is a Life Choice Due to the fact that homosexuality has been proven to sometimes be a life choice (not always genetic), it would be hypocritical to allow gay marriage, but then not allow incest-marriage, or polygamy, since these are obviously both life choices also.

A lot of people simply support something because it sounds nice and seems humanitarian, this can lead to ignorance, hypocrisy, and a self destructive policy. Most of the homosexual men end up marrying women just to avoid social stigma and continue to have secret affair with their lovers or they go to male sex workers secretly. A lot of men and women continue to be in the fake relationship living a bitter life. Hiding their originality and living a fake life for the sake of satisfying the society must be nothing less than a never ending trauma. Living a life cheating themselves and their partner is not worthy.

When India has its own dating apps and matrimony sites for straight people, why don’t these services also encourage same sex to marry? When we can celebrate the same joy finally being passed in another country, let’s also make sure India progress in this same way too. Perhaps it’s time Indian dating apps can take lead in this direction and encourage same sex marriages. When it comes to a point where the majority of Indian citizens accept it is a way of life, gay marriages will then be embraced in the society.
