Uber for X startups: are they on to something or doomed to fail?

    Uber in China

Startups like Uber (and the likes of Didi Kuaidi, Ola, Grabtaxi) as we know have been successful at fixing the broken taxi user experience. From inability to hail a cab, waiting on a line without no certainty a cab will be available, to driver ratings and seamless payments, these apps are transforming the taxi experience, despite their numerous imperfections like insufficient driver checks which led to some rape cases for Uber.

On the surface at least, it would seem like they’re meeting a real need. Now, many startups are now using the Uber moniker for themselves. There’s Uber for services like Page Advisor and Kaodim, Uber for laundry, and so many other so-called on-demand service apps coming up. I’m not convinced there’s a need for all of them.

Take laundry for example. Is the laundry experience so broken that I need to an app to fix it? Is it something that people will use often enough to make the app a sustainable business? Do I really need a mobile app for this? The answers are no, no, and no, in my opinion.

So what do you think guys? With the glut of Uber for X startups coming, are they all doomed to fail?
