How to select the right platform and attract the right developers

When you are creating your website or application for the first time, the best choice is one that is cost-effective and one that you are capable of using. WordPress is typically the go-to solution because it is easy to install, easy to create content on, and easy to style (to a limited degree).

However, there are literally thousands of different platforms for your site to be created. Many engineering firms or companies with engineering teams might not even use a platform and just create an application or site from scratch.

It is important to keep in mind when you are making decisions about the digital direction of your company that developers will feel comfortable or not with certain platforms. That is, the community of developers at large tends to have strong feelings for and against certain platforms. The developers you will look to hire will be subject to (or at least influenced by) these trends.

While there is no absolute right answer, it is good to keep in mind that developers don’t like working on outdated platforms. It may seem fad-y to select the newest platform to date, but this could actually be a great choice for attracting developers.

From a developers perspective, working on modern platforms will help them stay relevant while they work for you. (Because, let’s be honest, the chances of any current job being one’s dream job are pretty slim.) If you can provide an environment that allows stimulation and growth – a launching pad for future (young) hires – you will find yourself very competitive when searching for new hires.

However, you will have to weigh choosing a new platform that you may not understand against choosing an existing platform that you feel very comfortable. As with most choices, there is a continuum.

If you do nothing else, at least research your platforms before you select them with your future developers in mind.
