The team at Watches2u have compiled a catchy infographic which neatly summarizes the evolution of smart, wearable technology. While the hype for wearable tech devices such as the smartwatch has only entered mainstream media since the past few years, similar devices have actually existed since the early 2000s. To give you some perspective, Apple’s iPhone wasn’t released until June 2007. This shows the lack of supporting infrastructure, such as an operating system, as well as developers willing to make apps for such devices, meant that the concept failed to take off.
Sales of wearable tech products, which were only US$6.3 million in 2010, are predicted to rise to an astronomical US$12.6 billion by 2018. Out of these, smartwatches are expected to have a 17 percent share, with the rest going to gadgets such as wearable cameras, activity trackers, and health monitors. The Apple smartwatch is expected to drive growth in the sector.
