The Force Awakens this December. And in the online shopping arena, we have witnessed another type of lightsaber combat for a share of the S$4 billion Retail Empire in Singapore. Thousands of e-retailers such as ZALORA, Taobao, Expedia, Lazada, and Groupon have recently fought for sales on specific days known as the Retail Holidays.
What are Retail Holidays?
Year-end festive spirit coupled with year-end performance bonus give an extra boost to consumers’ spending force. This, together with the e-retailers’ desire to close the year on the dark side (in the black), has caused a cluster of manufactured holidays to arise. Unlike the traditional holidays that grew to be commercialised over the years, these holidays are born commercialised.
Yes, the Force is strong with this one.
ShopBack Stat Wars
From the recent Retail Holidays, ShopBack has observed some interesting numerical movement and decided to pit the three Retail Holidays – Singles Day, Cyber Monday, and 12.12 against each other in a 2015 edition of Stat Wars.
Here’s what we found. May the Force be with the sales.
