Stripe, Advent in talks on possible $53b PayPal deal
Stripe and private equity firm Advent are in talks to buy PayPal in a deal that could value the digital payments company at about US$53 billion, after PayPal rejected a July offer of US$60.50 a share.
The talks are ongoing and could produce a deal within weeks as PayPal CEO Enrique Lores, who joined in March 2026 after years at HP, pursues a turnaround.
In April, he reorganized PayPal into three business units, including consumer financial services, which houses Venmo.
The reported valuation would still be far below PayPal’s pandemic-era highs.
PayPal’s stock peaked at US$310 in 2021 before falling roughly 80%.
Stripe’s latest tender offer valued the company at US$159 billion and said Stripe was profitable.
Any deal would likely face antitrust and data-related scrutiny.
Separately, PayPal is considering cost cuts that could reduce the company’s workforce by 20% over two to three years.
