Streaming video services promised months ago finally come to China’s Xbox One

China’s Xbox One launch was a bit of a debacle, and one of chief complaints among Chinese gamers who bought the console was that it had been falsely advertised. Prior to the Xbox One’s launch, gamers had been told the console would feature BesTV’s streaming video services, allowing gamers to stream a variety of TV programs and films via their Xbox. But despite those promises, the console launched without any such services, and for months nothing resembling what had been promised appeared.

Now, around four months after the device’s launch, the promised services have finally been added. Microsoft China has sent a message to Xbox One owners announcing that BesTV streaming TV services will be available on the console starting today. As a way of making up for the long delay, BesTV is giving all Xbox One owners three free months of its Diamond subscription package.

The message doesn’t specifically mention English Premier League coverage – also promised in the Xbox One’s pre-release ads – but a report on TechWeb suggests that that, too, will commence this week.

The addition of streaming services may placate some gamers who have been trying to return their consoles over the delay, but it likely doesn’t address the bigger problem with Microsoft’s China version of its next-gen console: the lack of games. The Xbox One’s China game lineup is just as thin as it was at launch, and now that gamers have their streaming TV, they’re moving on to asking a more pressing question: where are all the games?
