In focus

Hello reader,

When I went to meet Sourav Banerjee, the co-founder of an AI-led startup, I expected nothing more than a casual introductory chat at a quiet café.

Instead, what unfolded was an intense conversation over lunch. His plate of pasta sat cold and forgotten while my cup of coffee went untouched until I gulped it down at the end of the meeting.

Banerjee talked about his company, Shunya Labs, and how it’s working on speech recognition for Indian languages – a space both technologically complex and socially important. Beyond the product, he spoke candidly about the challenges of building trust in AI ecosystems.

In particular, he questioned the transparency of the ranking process for Hugging Face’s leaderboard, which Nvidia’s model currently dominates. The catch? Nvidia is also an investor in Hugging Face.

This topic sparked my curiosity: Why are leaderboards so significant in the first place? And could they even be “gamed?”

In today’s featured story, I dive into Shunya Labs’ concerns about fairness in AI benchmarking and the broader debate over how much faith we should place in leaderboards, which often determine who gets noticed and who gets overlooked in the world of AI research.

Our second story brings you a guide on where agentic AI often goes wrong for enterprises and how they can avoid those mistakes.
