Baidu’s ChatGPT competitor Ernie disappoints in first outing (Updated)

Update (March 16, 5:30 pm): This article was updated to include details from Baidu’s presentation.

Hot off OpenAI’s announcement of GPT-4, Baidu has debuted Ernie Bot – its own generative AI contender – to the public for the first time on Thursday, Bloomberg reported.

The Chinese search giant’s founder Robin Li and CTO Wang Haifeng came on stage in Beijing to show off the chatbot’s capabilities and how it can bolster its cloud and content operations. Baidu is looking to integrate the bot into all of its other businesses as well, including search and autonomous driving.

Citing a source familiar with the matter, Bloomberg noted that Baidu believes Ernie Bot has reached the same levels as ChatGPT but bakes in superior knowledge on the Chinese language and culture.

However, Baidu stock fell over 6% in Hong Kong after the showcase featured limited capabilities in only a scripted video. Li did not interact with the bot in real time.

Ernie Bot isn’t the only ChatGPT competitor with that edge. Other Chinese tech titans such as Tencent, NetEase, Alibaba, and ByteDance are expected to launch their own generative AI projects soon.
