Square Enix Collective is the Japanese company’s Steam Greenlight
Square Enix is moving with the times! The company yesterday launched Square Enix Collective, its new community platform that will showcase indie game concepts to fans, who can then decide which concepts deserve to become games. The Roman arena, anybody?
Collective’s pilot phase will feature three projects, albeit all from Western-based developers: Ruffian Games from Dundee, UK, has Game of Glens; Kitfox Games from Montreal, Canada, will show Moon Hunters; and Tuque Games also from Montreal, Canada, rounds it up with World War Machine.
The selected project will go through a crowdfunding process on Indiegogo, and once successfully funded, could also receive support from Square Enix through the development process and in digital distribution once the game is complete. Project lead on Collective, Phil Elliot, said that “it’s up to the teams how much or little help they want from Square Enix.”
“There are lots of really talented small teams around the world with great game ideas,” he added;
For those teams, getting visibility, momentum, funding and distribution can be very tricky and that’s where we hope Collective can help.
While there’s no word on whether the initiative will go East (it looks to have been conceptualized by the company’s US-based arm), you can still check out Square Enix Collective here. Its pilot phase will last just 28 days.
