SpaceX has agreed to buy Cursor, an AI coding startup from the US-based Anysphere, in a US$60 billion all-stock deal expected to close in the third quarter.

The agreement comes days after SpaceX’s Nasdaq initial public offering raised US$75 billion.

The acquisition follows SpaceX’s February purchase of xAI, which made Elon Musk’s AI company a wholly owned subsidiary.

SpaceX later integrated more of xAI’s work into the parent company.

The deal also follows an April agreement that gave xAI the right to buy Anysphere for US$60 billion in stock or pay a US$10 billion breakup fee tied to the companies’ partnership.

Before this agreement, Cursor was reportedly set to raise US$2 billion at a US$50 billion valuation from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive, and Nvidia.

The deal comes as SpaceX continues to integrate xAI after scrutiny of Grok tools that produced nonconsensual sexualized deepfakes of women and girls.

At US$60 billion, the transaction would be much larger than previously disclosed acquisitions of AI coding startups and would likely require filings under the US Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust rules before closing.
