Dropmysite grabs sales and marketing veteran from BlackBerry

dropmysiteDropmysite, a Singapore-based startup that backs up emails and websites, has hired another executive from a big technology firm. This time, it is John Leung, Blackberry’s Asia Pacific director for media and sponsorships. He joins Dropmysite as VP of Sales in Asia.

The startup has a record of successfully enticing veteran tech executives to come on board. Prior to this, Dropmysite’s past hires include Yutaka Shinohara in Japan, formerly of Verisign and Trend Micro, as well as ex-Googlers Charif El Answari and Vinoaj Vijeyakumaar (who has since left the startup).

“John (Leung) will bring strong relationships and opportunities at telecommunications and web companies to the business,” says John Fearon, CEO and founder of Dropmysite.

Leung will be focused on major telcos and internet service providers in Asia. He will be targeting corporate teams servicing SMEs. Outside of his career, Leung also has his own business, running a bespoke gown design firm with his wife. Beyond work, he is a fervent Manchester United fan and a self-described motorhead.

While startups are often stereotypically portrayed as the preserve of awkward geeks and greenhorn university graduates, they’re starting to attract industry veterans who are out for a more fulfilling career.

RedMart, a Singapore-based online grocer, managed to hire ex-eBay marketing director Todd Kurie last year, while DocDoc, a 500 Startups-funded doctor directory, is founded by senior healthcare and investment banking executives.
