These are exciting times for ecommerce in India. Currently ranked ninth globally, the country’s ecommerce scene is expected to surpass the US to become the second-largest market by 2034.

Even though Amazon is leading in the industry, domestic players such as Flipkart and Myntra (both backed by US retail giant Walmart) are not far behind.
At the same time, growing pains have been evident in the sector. While rising internet penetration is taking ecommerce to smaller pockets across the country, cash on delivery is still the preferred mode of payment, which often translates to more returned items.
Counterfeit products continue to plague the online market, while last-mile delivery still faces challenges due to poor infrastructure – an issue that local logistics companies such as Xpressbees and Delhivery are aiming to address.
What’s clear, though, is that the ecommerce sector still has a large cart to fill: It accounts for only 5% of India’s US$600 billion retail market.

1. Amazon
Amazon tops the list in India when it comes to monthly active users (MAUs). The US-headquartered giant is one of the country’s seasoned ecommerce players, having rolled out its India website in 2013.
Since then, it has grown beyond its marketplace to enter categories such as e-groceries, pharmaceuticals, and bill payments. It now plans to tap its next 500 million users by pushing offerings in vernacular languages and voice shopping in Hindi.
