🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SoftBank is already building technology for AI servers it may make in Japan
- The plan sits within a broader effort already underway.
- SoftBank Corp., the telecom unit, has designed and tested a rack-integrated AI server system using NVIDIA H200 GPUs 1.
- Working with Foxconn and ZutaCore, which makes liquid-cooling systems for data center chips, it reached a partial Power Usage Effectiveness (pPUE), a data center energy-efficiency measure, of 1.03 1.
- The server work fits SoftBank Corp.’s plan to supply AI computing capacity in Japan through a partnership with Microsoft and Sakura Internet, a Japanese internet infrastructure and cloud services provider, with those resources based in Japan 2.
The move marks a shift from investor to infrastructure operator
- The server plan adds to SoftBank’s shift from a tech holding company to an operator of costly physical infrastructure 3.
- In the US, that change is clear at SB Energy, a SoftBank Group company focused on energy projects. It is planning a 10 gigawatt data center project at the Portsmouth Site in Pike County, Ohio, plus 10 gigawatts of new power generation. That includes 9.2 gigawatts of natural gas capacity backed by US$33.3 billion in Japanese funding 4.
- The move changes its business model and risk profile, away from venture bets such as its early US$20 million investment in Alibaba 5.
- The infrastructure push gives SoftBank another business line, yet its earnings do not currently cover interest payments well 3.
