SoftBank secures $10b loan backed by OpenAI stake: report
SoftBank Group has secured a two-year US$10 billion margin loan backed by its OpenAI stake, according to a financial report released on August 6.
The proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes across the group and Vision Fund II-2.
Goldman Sachs Bank USA, JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, Mizuho Securities USA LLC, Apollo Global Funding LLC, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. are lead arrangers for the facility.
The borrower plans to draw the loan this month, and SoftBank is guaranteeing it.
The report said the borrower may need to post cash or repay the loan early if the value of OpenAI’s preferred shares drops sharply.
Vision Fund II-2 is a limited partnership within SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2 structure.
The margin loan follows bridge financing that SoftBank said in February would initially support a US$30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI.
SoftBank said it had already invested US$34.6 billion in OpenAI through Vision Fund 2 since September 2024.
The new commitment would bring its cumulative investment to US$64.6 billion once completed.
