Smoov, a Singapore-based company has built the first web-based app store that can be used for all smartphones. These apps, for now at least, are available to customers at no cost. The apps provide services such as Cinema locator, mobile payment and bus timings.
“SmoovApps are much more clever than your typical mobile apps as they leverage on contextual information to make smart and informed decision for your users. Did we mention that they work on all major phone platforms as well?” That was as described on the website.
Smoov also claims to have over 1.5 million users on its smoov.me community which provides a healthy user base for developers. At the moment, the apps are still very focused on serving the Singapore market. I believe it is a sort of “market test” to see how mobile consumers react to the product.
The company plans to do more than just locating cinemas through its web app. Smoove plans to launch a mobile ticketing service which allows users to purchase movie tickets via the phone.
“What will happen is we will actually send a 2D barcode ticket to the user. And the user just simply needs to re-shift this 2D barcode in their mobile wallet on the phone. So once reaching the cinema, there will be a scanner which will actually verify that this mobile ticket is valid,” Zave Huang, co-founder of Smoov told CNA.
It’s an innovative idea but with risks. The vision of having a 2D barcode scanner installed at every cinema is pretty ambitious. That’s assuming if it deals with hardware installation. Things might be easier if it only requires the cinemas to install a software that could read Smoov’s barcodes in existing scanners. All these are just speculations, though.
