“One of the greatest lessons I’ve learnt about succeeding in anything was from a lady who had no business experience whatsoever. Today, I wonder if she learnt more from me, or vice versa.” Here, Garry Huang shares this unique story about a unique lady.
She was organizing and preparing for an event the next day, but things weren’t going right. Stuff that had to be bought wasn’t bought, some rentals didn’t work out, and two of her volunteers didn’t turn up as they promised. She was going crazy, and you could see she was really, really overwhelmed. Things were looking pretty desperate, and I proposed we scale down the event requirements. She refused – it was her baby and she wanted it to go really well.
“But it’ll never work out at this rate!†I exclaimed.
“I’ll try to ask for some help,†she replied.
I was in disbelief. I didn’t think it was possible. It was mid afternoon already, and the event was early the next morning. Nevertheless she started to make calls. Calls for help. She called and she called… literally almost everyone she knew.
A social creature, she had a huge network of friends and loose acquaintances from her 3 years in this current company. She went to these people, and asked. If they couldn’t help, she asked if they knew anyone who could, and was willing to.
Within 2 hours, she had gotten everything she wanted, or at least a promise that they would be down later that night to help her out.
I would probably never have even thought of asking before that day. Especially asking everyone I know. Best part is, this works for favours of network “useâ€, donations, physical help – practically everything!
The lesson here is twofold. First, your network is your net worth. Be good to everyone you know. One day, you may need them to return the favour. Second, ask if you need something. It may be hard on the pride, but explain the need, offer some positive goodwill (like a treat, or a drink), and ask. The worst that can happen is you get a “noâ€. Then, ask someone else.
