SK Hynix plans $12.9b chip plant to meet demand
SK Hynix will invest about US$12.9 billion to build an advanced chip packaging plant in South Korea.
The company said the new facility aims to address growing demand for memory chips used in AI.
SK Hynix is a major semiconductor manufacturer based in South Korea.
No timeline for the plant’s construction or completion was disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SK hynix puts $13B into HBM packaging capacity
- New P&T7 will handle advanced packaging and testing (P&T), the post-fabrication steps for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), and NAND flash. SK hynix has not shared construction or completion timelines 1.
- This moves on a supply chain chokepoint for HBM. The memory needs complex 2.5D packaging (placing multiple chips side by side on a silicon interposer) with silicon interposers and through-silicon vias (TSVs) that connect memory stacks to processors. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) dominates this with oversubscribed Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate (CoWoS) 2.
- SK hynix will place the packaging site next to Cheongju fabs M11, M12, and M15, with the nearby M15X site being readied for HBM. The setup improves on-site connectivity, logistics, and operational stability across the production flow 1.
- The global HBM market is projected to grow 33% annually through 2030, with demand expected to increase nearly eightfold by 2027 as AI accelerators require faster memory access 13.
Tool makers for advanced packaging set to get more orders
- HBM packaging uses hybrid bonding (directly fusing chip surfaces) and TSV etch with copper fill. It also uses atomic layer deposition (ALD). Lam Research supplies systems such as Syndion etch, SABRE 3D deposition, and VECTOR DT and DV-Prime that support hybrid bonding flows 3.
- Packaging quality affects yield (the share of units that pass testing) and thermals (heat dissipation) in AI accelerators (specialized processors for AI workloads). This raises the role of test and inspection in back-end lines, which cover packaging plus final test 4.
