SK hynix to invest $38.3b in chip fabs

SK hynix, a South Korean memory chip maker, said on August 7 that it will invest 54.3 trillion won (US$38.3 billion) in semiconductor fabrication plants in Yongin and Cheongju as demand for AI memory chips rises.

The company’s board approved 35.2 trillion won (US$24.6 billion) for the Y2 fab in Yongin, south of Seoul, and 19.1 trillion won (US$13.4 billion) for the M17 fab in Cheongju, according to a regulatory filing.

SK hynix plans to start building Y2 in July 2027, with its first cleanroom expected to open in June 2029 to produce high-bandwidth memory and other dynamic random-access memory products.

SK hynix said investment in Y2 will continue through October 2031.

The company said it chose Cheongju for the M17 NAND flash memory fab because the site already has related fabs and infrastructure, including power and water supplies.
