Have you heard of Heads Up? Originally a game Ellen Degeneres used to play on her show, it took casual social gaming to a new level when it was made into a mobile app.
Available for both iOS and Android, Heads Up is a simple word guessing game where one player keeps the phone on his head, and the rest of his friends help him guess the words that appear on screen. Their antics are recorded by the phone’s front camera, and can be replayed after the game ends.
Heads Up has always had very American themes (it was made in America, after all), and sometimes some words were impossible to guess. Singapore-based Nectary Studio saw that loophole, and the result of its observation is a culturalized version of Heads Up called Guess the Word SG.
Guess the Word SG employs the same concept as Heads Up, except that it has Singaporean themes. Never mind it’s a shameless clone; it’s super fun! If you’re the king of local TV, or feel like you know the island as well as a cab driver, then you’re probably going to ace the game. Local gamers will be pleased to know that they also have an arcade trivia pack, though this one is tough if you aren’t a fan of the fighting game machines.
Like Heads Up, Guess the Word SG has other trivia packs you can buy for S$1.28 (about $1) though new users can get four paid packs for free by sharing them on their Facebook feeds.
The game is visually pleasing with cute illustrations and its trivia is wide-ranging, albeit repetitive in certain categories (Singapore isn’t that big, after all). Its gyroscope detection could use a little more fine-tuning, but it’s nothing that will detract from the fun you’re going to have.
Guess the Word SG is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.
