Weibo’s Chinese New Year tweet explosion was 46% more explosive than last year

The year of the sheep is here! And with it, as usual, come crazy engagement numbers from Sina Weibo. According to Weibo’s own Weibo, the site saw:

  • 102 million total users over the course of the evening, up 46% from last year
  • 4.15 billion reads of Spring-Festival related posts
  • 15.4 million lucky users who managed to grab red envelopes
  • 45 million posts about the year of the sheep
  • 34.7 million users participated in Weibo’s online event for the new year

Unsurprisingly, the night’s most popular messages came from the service’s top celebrities. Taking home the crown this year was model/actress Angelababy, whose photo of herself in the kitchen (below) along with the message “Like this and earn big in the new year!” has been liked over 3 million times already.
