Shein falsifies statements on factories, lacks disclosures required by UK law

Shein, the fast-growing Chinese online retailer, has not made public disclosures about working conditions along its supply chain that are required by law in the UK, and the company until recently falsely stated on its website that conditions in the factories it uses were certified by international labor standards bodies,” Reuters reported.

Details:

  • A spokesperson for the company said that it is finalizing statements required by the law and plans to publish them in the next couple of weeks.
  • Shein also stated on its website that the factories it works with are certified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and that Shein was in compliance with standards set by international organizations like Social Accountability International.
  • An ISO spokesperson says that they do not accredit or certify any company, as they only establish standards themselves. Meanwhile, Social Accountability International said they had no contact with Shein.
