Singapore-headquartered Better Bite Ventures has announced the first four deals under its First Bite program, which invests in alternative protein startups in the Asia Pacific region.
Two of its new investments are from Singapore. Allium Bio wants to process mycelium and microalgae to create sustainable ingredients, while Cultivaer (still in stealth mode) is aiming to accelerate the scalability of fermentation-based alternative proteins.
The remaining two are Klevermeat, an Indian firm that produces cell-based seafood, and New Zealand-based EatKinda, which creates ice cream out of cosmetically imperfect cauliflower that would otherwise go to waste.
The First Bite program – which launched several months ago and is open for applications until May 19 – injects US$50,000 into each alt-protein startup.
Founded by Michal Klar and Simon Newstead in 2021, Better Bite Ventures has raised US$15 million and invested in 20 early-stage companies in the alternative protein space.
