Southeast Asian ride-hailing app Grab is expanding its GrabShare service to Malaysia and the Philippines, it announced today. GrabShare is Grab’s version of UberPool, its competitor’s multiple-passenger ferrying service.
With GrabShare, two passengers can be picked up during a single GrabCar fare. The app calculates the passengers’ destinations and matches them together in such a way as to avoid long detours. The fixed fare is cheaper for all passengers and the driver can complete more bookings on a single drive.
Grab says that carpooling with GrabShare can help ease traffic congestion in cities like Kuala Lumpur, which has the highest number of registered cars in Malaysia. The company points to a 2014 Nielsen study that found Malaysia has the third highest car ownership globally.
GrabShare launched in Singapore last December. Since then, Grab says, there have been 2 million GrabShare rides.
Competing service UberPool has been available in Singapore and Manila since last June.
Grab recently launched GrabCoach, a bus-hailing service for larger parties of passengers.
