Scrollback raises $500k for its real-time chat web widget

Scrollback, a Singapore and India-based startup that’s building a real-time chat widget for online communities, has raised US$500,000 in seed funding.

The round is led by Jungle Ventures and supported by the Singapore government’s Technology Incubation Scheme, Singapore Angel Network, Roland Turner, and other angels from Singapore.

The startup was a part of Singapore startup accelerator JFDI’s bootcamp. The accelerator provides mentorship, a structured learning program, and a tiny five-digit investment in each startup.

Scrollback was founded by Aravind Ravi-Sulekha and Gaurav Srivastava in June 2013. It is open source, and is being used by Mozilla and Dogecoin communities. Over 700 active groups are now using the app.

The service consists of rooms that can be embedded on websites and apps. It connects to other channels like IRC and Twitter, creating conversations that span across platforms.

Larissa Shapiro, head of contributor development at Mozilla says: “IRC is central to Mozilla communities’ communication process, which has usually meant a steep learning curve for new or potential contributors. Scrollback has eliminated that barrier for many of our communities by bringing their IRC channels to their websites with a beautiful, modern and intuitive user experience.”
