Report: Pinduoduo founder Colin Huang resigns as chairman

Pinduoduo founder Colin Huang has stepped down as chairman of the board of directors for the social ecommerce company he helped turn into a giant that now has more annual active buyers than JD.com and Alibaba Group Holding,” reported South China Morning Post.

Details:

  • Pinduoduo CEO Chen Lei will take over as the company’s new chairman.
  • Huang will now focus on research in areas such as food and life sciences, which he believes could contribute to the future of China’s agriculture platform.

Context:

  • Chen is one of the founding members of Pinduoduo and has served as its chief technical officer since 2016. Prior to joining the company, he served in the same role for gaming startup Xinyoudi Studio.
  • In January, Pinduoduo came under fire for reporting two employee deaths, which renewed criticism of the 996 culture in China’s tech companies.
