Samsung Wants Developers For Its Sexy Smart TV in Singapore

samsung smarttvYesterday afternoon, the Edelman PR folks for Samsung told me that they are looking for developers in Singapore to build educational applications for their Smart TV.

Intrigued, I googled its Smart TV and found it looks really sexy. I’ve not yet had any chance to see or touch it live, but this video review by T3 makes me drool (below).

For Samsung to pick Singapore is an interesting choice, because we don’t have that many developers here. But apparently, Samsung Asia really wanted localized content from this little island.

Irene Ng, VP of sales and marketing at Samsung Asia, explained:

To encourage learning, particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, is core to Samsung’s values and heritage […] Samsung aims to provide the platform and support for developers to create entertaining, intuitive, social and visual apps.

So what’s Samsung looking for? Basically, for developers to create educational apps for its Smart TV app platform. I have broken down the process into three simple and understandable steps for impatient developers to understand the procedure quickly:

  • Step 2: Submit your Smart TV app proposal to Samsung. You have about five weeks, until October 31st.
  • Step 3 (aka: the carrot): If you’re shortlisted, Samsung will provide you with 24/7 access to Samsung’s Developer’s Forum (SDF), which includes their SDKs and support resources. In other words, you will have full support to test your apps with Samsung — straight from the company itself.

Statistics

Developing apps for Smart TV sounds new and that is why I decided to pick up the story. It’s about being part of the new trend, assuming that you believe Internet TV is going to be one of the upcoming trends for the next decade.

The statistics aren’t as pretty as Samsung’s Smart TV, though. There are currently more than 900 apps designed for Smart TV, generating an average of 140,000 downloads per month.
