Samsung Electronics is developing an AI PC accelerator called GAIA and has supplied prototypes to Lenovo and HP for performance testing ahead of planned mass production next year, according to a July 10 report.

The report said GAIA is built on a 4-nanometer process, uses a neural processing unit for generative AI workloads, and is designed to work with processing-in-memory.

Samsung’s last public PC processor effort was the Exynos 5 Dual application processor used in Google’s Chromebook in 2012, making GAIA a potential return to the PC chip segment.

The report also said Samsung discontinued that business two years later.

AI PCs are emerging as a new battleground in semiconductors after data centers. It listed Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Huawei among companies in the market.
