After launching its latest smartphone in Indonesia, RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) is bringing the BBM Apps Hackathon to the nation as well. The handset maker is inviting top talents in Indonesia from developer communities to exchange ideas, and build great apps on top of the RIM’s new social platform in a two-day intensive program.
RIM previously invited developers to submit their apps, whether still an idea stage or if you already have a working prototype. Developers were also asked to write an essay about how the social platform can add more value to their app, and explain how they can leverage the social platform in the app. This is essay was a somewhat odd requirement, but nonetheless it looks like a promising event. 20 lucky winners are to be invited to attend the event which will start tomorrow at the Ritz Carlton Pacific Place, Jakarta. Developers will be able to learn how to leverage the large BBM market that boasts over than 45 million users.
With a plummeting share in smartphone market in the U.S. this effort in Indonesia makes sense for RIM. It should help further solidify one of its biggest user bases in Asia by bringing more quality apps to market. RIM is also scheduled to bring the BBM Apps Hackathon and Blackberry Developer Conference to Thailand on November 17 and 18, and December 7 and 8.

The deadline for submissions ended back on November 10. ↩
