Indie game Flight of the Robot kills time, but a copy of Jetpack Joyride
Singapore-based game studio Digital Forge has come out with Flight of the Robot, a new tilt game for the iPhone. It involves a robot with a single mission – to go up.
The higher you fly – avoiding obstacles on the way – the more points you get. As you fly up you, you collect coins along the way that you can use to buy cosmetic changes to your robot. If you aren’t too busy dodging projectiles, there are tokens that occasionally appear that will grant you tries to play a drop game that will either earn you more coins or greater speed boosts.
You might be thinking that you’ve seen this game before. The concept is a lot like popular game Jetpack Joyride by Halfbrick studios. Instead of a dude with a jetpack, you have a robot. Your direction in Flight of the Robot is now up instead of sideways, You are still dodging laser beams and rockets, collecting tokens, coins, and power ups to go higher. Even the starting position is similar – a platform with scientists on it. There is so much ripped from Jetpack Joyride that it almost seems like the same game got reskinned. The only saving grace for me is the utilization of the tilt on Flight of the Robot – not having to use my fingers to play this game gives me more on-screen visibility to avoid oncoming obstacles.
At least the art direction looks somewhat different to its jetpack counterpart. Flight of the Robot follows a more retro 8-bit arcade-ish style, which is still pleasant to look at. The music is pretty catchy assuming you are a fan of robots and electronic music.
The game is currently free to download for iOS
