“Tony Fernandes revealed that the main thrust of its digital transformation is logistics, noting that he wants to be ‘the best delivery guy in town.’ He also shares that the airline is looking to enter into the ride-hailing business,” reported The Edge Market.
Details:
- The statement from AirAsia’s founder and group CEO’s means that the company will take on regional ride-hailing giants Grab and Gojek. However, specific details regarding timeline of the launch or which markets it will enter weren’t disclosed.
- The Malaysian low-cost airline, which aims to expand its presence in Southeast Asia’s “super app” race, launched its food delivery service this month.
Context:
- AirAsia had recently raised US$82 million from investors including TPG Capital executives and Aimia Inc. through a private share placement.
- The company wants to be “the one-stop shop portal to satisfy all consumer needs,” AirAsia.com CEO Karen Chan said at Tech in Asia’s Product Development Conference last year. “You can fly, stay, shop, eat, chat – all from the convenience of one app,” she added.
