In brief: Real-time video analytics startup Gorilla raises $15m
Gorilla Technology Group, an AI and computer vision solutions provider, has secured US$15 million in D-round funding from SBI Investment, a subsidiary of Japan’s SBI Group.
The funding marks SBI Investment’s first investment in a Taiwanese, AI-focused company and will give SBI Group a minority stake in Gorilla. Gorilla plans to use the investment to enhance its AI and video analytics algorithms for the fintech space, work towards cementing a worldwide sales and marketing presence, and expand its footprint in Japanese markets.

The Taipei-based startup provides video analytics and image recognition solutions for surveillance, retail, and media purposes. It will work with SBI Group on “edge AI” – the processing of AI algorithms locally on hardware devices to provide analytics in real time.
Gorilla raised an undisclosed amount of series C funding in March 2015 from Acer and Telstra Ventures, among others. It also counts US data management giant EMC – now owned by Dell – as an investor, and it has partnered with Intel on video analytics.
