Razer has started manufacturing its own mechanical keyboard switches

Last night, Razer posted a Facebook album that introduced the Razer mechanical switches. It claims the switches had been “engineered from the ground up with one single purpose—gaming.” The album caption went on to say:

Be it the clicky and tactile Razer Green Switches or the silent and tactile Razer Orange Switches…

Hang on. It’s one thing to just reproduce Cherry switches. It’s another to pump R&D money into brand new types of mechanical keyboard switches. Apart from the red, blue, brown and black switches that currently exist, you now have green and orange ones. Each switch, typified by its color, has a different tactility, making a keyboard of black switches (for example) ideal for a particular game genre.

After studying the technicalities of mechanical keyboard switches, I can safely say that in laymen’s terms the new Razer switches, having been tested by professional cyberathletes, are better suited for gaming because they recognize key presses quicker than the present switches.

Frankly, none of us are ever going to play at the same level a professional eSports player does. And just as frankly, a difference of 0.3mm in tactility is not going to affect us at all. But everyone knows Razer isn’t just a peripheral brand. It’s a lifestyle.
