Sony: New PS Vita TV and revamped PS Vita hitting Japan soon, PS4 arriving in February

This afternoon at the Tokyo Game Show 2013, Sony (NYSE:SNE) confirmed a date that very many Japanese gamers have been waiting for. The next-gen PlayStation 4 will go on sale in Japan on February 22, three month after its launch in the US.

Japanese console gamers can snap up the PS4 for JPY 46,179 ($466) – inevitably more than the $399 sticker price in the US. Engadget is on the scene in Tokyo, and reported a groan of disappointment from the Japanese crowd at the late launch date.

But a slimmer and lighter PS Vita has also been unveiled this afternoon. The revamped handheld console will be about $190 when the wi-fi only model hits Japan next month, on October 10.

The next-gen PS Vita will come with 1GB of onboard storage, and also gets six color options (pink, black, blue, grey, white, and yellow). Plus, three special edition models have been lined up. Sony is aiming to sell five million PSPs and PS Vita models in 2013, down from seven million in 2012.

(Update: The PS Vita TV has just been unveiled too – a tiny set-top box that aims to challenge Apple TV. Initially it’s focused on Japan, launching there in November. It also allows games to be played on a TV.)
