Peneroka: An Online Magazine from Budi Putra

PenerokaThe former country editor of Yahoo Indonesia has revealed his latest project: an online magazine named Peneroka. This, as Budi Putra wrote earlier on his personal blog, will be a blog with several writers or contributors. He partnered with Jimmi Kembaren, who is also a former Yahoo employee to work on the project. Budi is responsible for the content while Jimmi handles the product.

Peneroka is an Indonesian word meaning “pioneer.” It was designed as an online magazine with feature articles on technology and science, business and finance, media, lifestyle and entertainment, culture and arts. Budi wrote in his blog post,

By launching Peneroka, Jimmi Kembaren and I are trying to do an experiment in terms of product and content.

The blog has a sleek interface with four headlines and a big photo for each article. Visitors can read tips and tricks, top lists, reviews and trivia just by clicking one of the headlines provided. Interestingly, there’s no archive or search engine within the blog. Once you’ve missed an article you can’t find it in the blog anymore. Perhaps, this is the main experiment in what Budi and Jimmi are trying to do.

We reached out to Budi to talk about the philosophy behind this unique experiment. Here’s the Q&A we conducted via email with one of the most prominent bloggers in the country:

Why did you choose a blog as the platform for your online magazine?

We decided to use the blogging platform WordPress as a CMS since WordPress is simple yet probably [one of the most] powerful platforms to date.

What’s is the philosophy behind Peneroka?

That ‘the user is king.’ That’s why we provide and deliver high quality content for them. We suggest to them what’s good to read.

Why is there no archiving or search engine feature within Peneroka?
