OpenAI to brief Trump officials on upcoming AI models
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to brief US administration officials and lawmakers next week on the company’s next generation of AI models, as Washington prepares a safety review framework for advanced systems.
OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane said the meetings will cover the upcoming model family and its potential impact on work.
The US government is expected to introduce a voluntary review framework within weeks that would allow developers to provide officials with access to frontier AI models for up to 30 days before release, without requiring licensing.
Altman has previously said OpenAI’s upcoming releases include GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, with GPT-5 combining the company’s reasoning models with its GPT series.
The talks also follow Moonshot’s Kimi K3. Moonshot is a China-based AI startup. The 2.8 trillion-parameter model is roughly on par with leading US systems in independent evaluations.
Lehane said OpenAI supports a national AI standard or aligned state rules, as lawmakers introduced more than 1,100 AI-related bills in 2025, according to the US Chamber of Commerce.
