OpenAI plans 2027 IPO, may list earlier
OpenAI plans to go public in 2027 and could list earlier if momentum continues, according to CFO Sarah Friar’s remarks to employees at an August 19 all-hands meeting.
OpenAI confidentially filed for an initial public offering with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June.
Friar said the company’s March fundraising brought in US$122 billion, giving it flexibility on timing.
OpenAI faces pressure to justify its US$852 billion valuation before the listing.
A confidential filing lets companies resolve SEC comments out of public view, but they must publicly file at least 15 days before a roadshow, and the process can still take months.
OpenAI said its nonprofit retains control over the for-profit arm, an unusual structure for a public listing.
OpenAI was topping US$25 billion in annualized revenue in February.
Friar also told employees not to worry if Anthropic lists first. Anthropic said it submitted a confidential draft S-1 registration statement.
However, the number of shares to be offered and the price have not yet been determined.
