Taking short courses on Islam during Ramadan while boarding in religious schools is quite common — it’s like Muslim camp. But in Indonesia, camp is now online.
Paseban, a mobile community portal, held online Islamic courses during Ramadan called “Pesantren Kilat Ramadan Online” (Online Islamic Course). Traditionally these courses are taught at boarding schools, but the materials and activities for this course were all provided online. With a simple registration process using your mobile number, anyone can join this online school and participate in educational discussions about Islam. There are also questions and answer sessions with clerics, and other opportunities to interact with fellow Muslims.
Qorina Ilma Faradisa, communications & external relations manager of Paseban explains:
We have a team of clerics who constantly monitor every discussion thread in this online school, so that each participant can ask many things about Ramadan, or Islam in general, directly to the experts. Our team will also conduct evaluations – then the participant with the highest score will receive a special reward at the end of the course session.
The team is also involved in offline activities, such as visiting schools in the Bandung area to give religious lectures, and promoting this online school. A week after it first started, this school now has 43 participants from across Indonesia, and is still welcoming anyone who wants to join.
Besides sharing a good laugh during Ramadan, sharing knowledge will be a very positive way for Muslims in Indonesia to fill in time, as it helps establish relationships with fellow netizens.
